Fire and Town Services

In the early days, Town services were minimal. There were no Fire Departments until 1862, although fires were common, with the buildings constructed mostly of wood. Open flames were everywhere, to provide heat, light and cooking facilities. Road maintenance was tedious, using hand labor and horses or oxen teams. Fire hydrants and water systems started about 1890, and sewer systems were only added in the 1930's. These are things were rarely think about today, until it becomes time to vote on the yearly town budget.

The Wolfeboro Historical Society welcomes the donation of local photographs from the early days, as well as any details that may be found in ancestors attics.
