Transportation

Mechanized transportation in Wolfeboro began with the railroad in 1872, which really spurred the town development as an industrial and tourist location. Automobiles were first noted in town in the Granite State News in 1897, and, while an unusual sight attracting attention for many years, ultimately led to the demise of the railroad. Autos were also the inspiration for homemade motorized contraptions. Airplanes appeared in the late 1910's, and were uncommon for several decades. Bicycles are included herein, but as their safety improved in the late 1800's, their use was competing with autos, and bicycles were mainly used as toys or sports equipment.

The Wolfeboro Historical Society welcomes the donation of local photographs from the early days, as well as any details that may be found in ancestors attics.
