This photo was taken from the other side of the Smith River passage to Lake Winnipesaukee. The roof on the building across South Main St. was set afire by flaming embers that weren't immediately noticed. Brewster Academy Students saved the building from total destruction. Although the caption below the photo calls it the Brackett-Thompson Building, it is better known as the Bank Building, which still stands today. The roof was quickly repaired after the fire.
