After the original elegant 3-story Goodwin Block building was destroyed by fire on May 28, 1899, a 1-story clapboard building was built on the site that same year. This photo shows the results of a fire on October 13, 1908. The back of the building shows scarred walls and boarded up doors and windows. Note the railroad tracks leading to the dockside wharves. In 1909, the structure was rebuilt and opened again.
