Stamp Act Island in Lake Wentworth was named after the British Stamp Act of 1765, imposing taxes which the Americans considered unfair. In the early 1900's the island was owned by Sarah M. Hodge (local furniture dealer) and John L. Peavey (prominent businessman, Peavey Block) who died in 1910. This is the Peavey cottage, 1914. The island became a wildlife preservation in 1977 and the last building was removed in 1978.
