The first step in ice harvesting is to use a special rake, as shown, to establish a cutting grid on the ice. This is done when the ice has a thickness of about a foot, and leads to convenient cubic foot blocks. The tools laying nearby include a brush to clear away surface snow or ice dust from cutting, tongs, and poles to move floating blocks to the liftout area. These photos were taken at a NH Farm Museum demonstration in Milton.
