This hand-held fire extinquisher used pressurized carbon dioxide, released by turning the handle below the nozzle. Carbon dioxide use began about 1924, and the cannister was refillable. This was a major improvement, as earlier extinquishers simply spread powders around; they were only effective on small fires and many of the chemicals used would be banned today.
