Steamship James Bell at the Wolfeboro Wharf. The group of connected buildings on the right are the Belvue House hotel. The building on the left burned in the Goodwin Block fire of 1899. The Peavey Block is not yet built, dating the photo to before 1890. The James Bell was an early side paddlewheeler built in 1859 with a capacity of 350. First used for regular routes, the Boston and Maine Railroad purchased the ship to reduce the competition and then used it for charters. It suffered hull damage when grounded in 1885 and sank the next spring at Lake Village, ending its career.
