Wolfeboro Historical Society Digital Archive Road Trips State Historic Markers |
|
This State Marker is on Route 113A in Wonalancet and tells the story of the Chinook Kennels from 1930, when the Seeley's ran the kennels. The earlier history is quite interesting, but omitted in the markers. The original breeder and trainer was Arthur Walden, an Alaskan gold rush prospector. Active in Wonalancet by about 1890, he developed the Chinook breed in 1917 and founded the New England Sled Dog Club in 1924. The Chinook breed was named the official New Hampshire State Dog in 2009 and introduced as a separate breed for the first time in the Westminster Dog Show in 2014. The kennels are no longer active.
